Healthcare professionals are required to participate in a minimum amount of Continuing Medical Education programs to comply with licensing requirements. This helps licensing boards ensure that providers are continually training and educating themselves in their respective fields. Whether you are applying for a new license or renewing, keeping up with CME courses, and saving the documentation for later is essential. Read on to discover some suggestions and resources for providers looking to meet their CME requirements.

Know Your Needs.

How many hours of training do you need for your goals? If your goal is to apply for or renew a license, check the required number of hours and type of training that you need before you start making plans. The Federation of State Medical Boards works to streamline the licensing process and has created a list of the requirements for license renewal organized by state. See it here.

Look for CME Programs that are accredited.

Organizations such as the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC), and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy (ACPE) have developed guidelines and standards for CME programs. Along the same lines of the accredited courses, many states require several hours of a specific category. For example, additional certifications associated with standards set by the American Medical Association (AMA) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) may be required.
